Functional medicine is more than just a different approach to healthcare, it is an entirely different philosophy about how we both provide and consume healthcare. I can honestly say that in my practice, I don’t treat diseases, but rather I treat patients; some of whom have diseases and some do not. I focus on normalizing the underlying physiology and restoring healthy function through nutrition and lifestyle changes. People often have significant symptoms and they feel sick, but they don’t meet the technical requirements for a particular diagnosis. In many offices this means that they don’t get any treatment at all, but for my patients, this is just the beginning. I work with my patients to discover the dysfunctional patterns that lead to their symptoms, and then develop strategies to correct these patterns and restore optimal health.
